Lambi Judaai – Reshma

Reshma was born in BikanerRajasthan to a Banjara (Gypsy) family around 1947. She did not receive any formal education and spent much of her childhood singing at the mazars (shrines) of the mystic saints of Sindh. She still loves going to the mazars, where several of her pirs (holy men) reside.

She once said in an interview, “I was born in a family of saudagars (traders) in Rajasthan in a small settlement called Bikaner…I belong to a huge clan of gypsies.  We were forever travelling around.  Though a lot of us have now settled and taken up permanent residences in Lahore and Karachi, whenever we feel restless we pack our bags and move on.”

Hindi Lyrics Translation

Lambi Judaai

its a love of four days, o god, and then long separation, long separation

without you my heart doesn’t get rest anywhere

without you my life doesn’t go anywhere

after how many ages/time o god, you (my love) came to my memory, you reminded me

i was lost in my own tunes in such a way that

i have forgot your sign/resemblance even

i was lonely from centuries that

i have forgot your love

i was so entangled/involved in this life that  by now why should i complain to you

o god god……..

in every helplessness/defeat, in this life, i loved only you, i demanded/desired only you

on whatever ways my heart traveled, i didn’t get destination, i didn’t get love

by hiding myself i went through the roads, by protecting my heart, by protecting my heart

without you my heart doesn’t get rest anywhere

without you my life doesn’t go anywhere

after how many ages/time o god, you (my love) came to my memory, you reminded me

god god……
